Hackberry Tree Removal - July 13, 2007

An old friend that greeted Church goers to Wheatland for 81 years is no more.  Our Hackberry tree was removed to the ground today by the tree removal company "Tree People Service".  Certified arborist Thomas Nichols and his assistants, John Scarborough and Jamie Steward, started the job on Wednesday and completed it today (Friday).

Unfortunately there was rot running down the center of the entire tree.  According to Mr. Nichols the rot was caused by the hypoxylon canker fungus.  If not removed, the tree would have eventually fallen and possibly damaged the Church.

Please check out the pictures below.  Note, the unusual stains seen in the cross section pictures are shapes from the rot caused by the hypoxylon canker fungus.  If you would like to see these pictures as a slide show please click here.
