The United Methodist Men's meeting
started at 9:00 am with a hot breakfast of scrambled
eggs, sausages, biscuits, donuts, fruit, and coffee.
The breakfast was absolutely wonderful - though we would
later find out it was the kind of breakfast we should
not be eating.
Sharon Cox, Registered Dietician
(R.D.) arrived promptly at 9:30 and began her
presentation. According to Sharon 300,000 people
die each year from obesity - our eating habits and diets
are very important. Sharon pointed out the
following:
| |
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day |
| |
About portion
sizes:
| Meat - amount
that fits in your palm or about the
size of a deck of cards |
| Fruit – size of a
tennis ball represents a good fruit
serving |
| Potatoes and
starches – a cup |
|
| |
Everything we eat that was alive
has cholesterol and saturated fats. |
| |
If you fix something low fat for
the family don’t announce it – in most cases
they will not even know. |
| |
Eat your vegetables. |
| |
If you have food allergies you
can try pureed baby foods. |
| |
If you drink diet drinks you
should also drink the same amount of water. |
| |
Walnuts and almonds are a good
source of omega-3. |
| |
Think of eating as being fuel for
our bodies. |
| |
Foods high in fiber make you feel
full longer. |
| |
Daily fiber goal is 25-30 grams. |
