United Methodist Men - October 13, 2007

Sharon Cox's Presentation

The United Methodist Men's meeting started at 9:00 am with a hot breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausages, biscuits, donuts, fruit, and coffee.  The breakfast was absolutely wonderful - though we would later find out it was the kind of breakfast we should not be eating.

Sharon Cox, Registered Dietician (R.D.) arrived promptly at 9:30 and began her presentation.  According to Sharon 300,000 people die each year from obesity - our eating habits and diets are very important.  Sharon pointed out the following:

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day

  About portion sizes:
Meat - amount that fits in your palm or about the size of a deck of cards
Fruit – size of a tennis ball represents a good fruit serving
Potatoes and starches – a cup

Everything we eat that was alive has cholesterol and saturated fats.

If you fix something low fat for the family don’t announce it – in most cases they will not even know.

Eat your vegetables.

If you have food allergies you can try pureed baby foods.

If you drink diet drinks you should also drink the same amount of water.

Walnuts and almonds are a good source of omega-3.

Think of eating as being fuel for our bodies.

Foods high in fiber make you feel full longer.

Daily fiber goal is 25-30 grams.
